If I’m casting something from my VPN-protected phone to my TV, does my TV need protection too? I can’t tell if it’s merely mirroring or if it is actually capturing the stream. TV has to be on the same LAN for it to work, so I can’t just disconnect it.
I believe the way a chromecast/smart tv works is that an app on your phone sends a command to fetch the required media, it is the streaming device making the request for the media and it does not have a VPN enabled.
If you were to forward traffic from your wireless/wired router over a VPN this would include requests made by the streaming device and it would be protected/requesting from a different location.
TL;DR: Your TV needs protection too.
For a technical answer – the only time that I have tried to cast from my computer (using a VPN) to the Chromecast, when it did not work was with Zattoo (it gave a ‘out of the country’ error).
Otherwise, casting from my computer (on a vpn) to the Chromecast device (no vpn) works just fine.

you can’t VPN a TV you would need to make your router connect to a VPN , ie run a vpn client like openvpn

If you want your Chromecast device ‘protected’, have it connect to an wireless access point which itself it connected to a VPN.
Not unless you are mirroring. If you are casting Netflix or something no,. It only would if your VPN is set up on your router.

I get OPs question. They think because the vpn is protecting the device they are casting from that the TV may be protected. This isn’t the case. The TV needs to be behind a vpn also, either at the router or the TV itself. My TV runs android so putting a vpn on it is very easy.
