Aura vs others?

Recently some family had their identity stolen and lost all their money. Which got me looking into protection and I was curious what yall use and what you like about it? Most of the reviews I read online are from companies reviewing themselves and then talking about others… not helpful. And I’ve found a couple posts here but they’re old.

I found aura to be a popular service and they own a few other companies that seem to be popular. Might go with them but would love your opinions!

Edit: I’ll also add that I use 2-factor authentication for everything as well as vpns and usually hide my email with apples “hide my email” feature. Im just looking for a little something extra if anything slips up. Sounds like aura or myid is a good option?

I have MyID Care and it’s pretty good actually. I get an alert any time they find one of my email addresses on the dark web, they monitor my drivers license, SS number etc. but I get the top tier free because of a security breech years ago by the government. I also have two factor ID on all accounts and credit freezes with the 3 major bureaus.

I recommend aura. I have the family plan for 5 people and linked my family members. I am able to check any alerts from any of my family members from my account. It checks the dark web for your info like normal services. I have frozen the 3 credit bureaus as well.

Honestly, I’m not really a fan of Aura. It is pretty broad with information it finds, like it doesn’t give specifics which information was tied to an email found, for example. It also annoys me with “unusual transaction” alerts literally any time I buy anything. I am probably not going to renew this service and will look elsewhere in the future. It makes me wonder if a lot of their reviews are fake. Who knows, maybe one day it will actually tell me something useful about leaked information, but so far it’s been more annoying to use than anything. I’ve also used IdentityWorks, and idnotify, both of which have been more helpful than Aura in my opinion, at least so far.

so i just signed up for Aura and they sent me leaked data alerts but no instructions about what to do about it. anyone know?

Password leak

Your password was found on the dark web. Hackers may be able to use this information to access your accounts.

Please review your alerts, and replace any passwords you are still using.

Email address leaks

Your email address was found on the dark web.

While it’s scary to have your information leaked, hackers and scammers can’t do much with your email address by itself. They mainly use this information to target addresses that are in active use.

Your monitoring is active

Aura monitors the dark web 24/7 for leaked information, including your email address and the other items in your Vault. We’ll alert you if we find your information in a data breach.

what am supposed to do when Aura emails me alerts of data leaks? I can’t find any useful instructions about that from Aura.

DO NOT RECOMMEND. The company has no integrity and does not provide refunds even with a request less than 24-hours request from the charge. They did not allow me the option to only have one service and said it was a package deal for identity theft, password manager, and VPN.

  1. password manager is dysfunctional and frequently creates second log-ins rather than updating. Or I would have passwords saved with a password but not the username. The password generator is good, allowing you to choose length or special characters to use or not use. This feature is pointless if passwords are not saved correctly.
  2. the password manager extension in Chrome was buggy. I would get stuck in loops of trying to log-in but never gaining access. I wasted too much time and stopped using the feature.
  3. VPN blocks access to websites. With Nord VPN, with the option to change VPN location, I often can access any website with ease. After explaining my reason for requesting a refund and that their records would show that I stopped using their services, I still was not offered a partial refund!!!

It’s pretty bad! I’m canceling. Super buggy technology and really bad customer service.

Aura is good, probably better then most. They alert you to a breach and it will say what the leak of data was. Passwords leaks it will show you a few characters, which if you use the same one all the time, change it. Email and phone number, not much you can do other than get a new one or use different email addresses and phone numbers for different things. Social security number leaks are good, but honestly everyone should just freeze their credit reports at this time. The app on mobile is great at blocking spam calls. I only get calls I need and if needed I turn it off for a call back service. VPN and password ID recommend something else. This isn’t their area of expertise, and most services like aura fail in this area.

In July 2024 I paid for a year subscription. In September I no longer had access to my account, due to some glitch. Resetting password gave me a red-texted error message to call tech support. The number sent me to some random phone support who knows nothing about the issue. They say they will have tech support call back. I have called in 4 times about this issue.

In early November I told them to remove my card from auto pay, until my problem gets resolved. Since it did not get resolved I have asked for my money back since I no longer control my account (THEY CONTROL IT, AND THEY HAVE ALL MY DATA FOR EVERYTHING) and I am no longer getting what I have pre-paid for. When I demanded it back, the lazy support guy said I was past the 60 day money back guarantee. He was one of 4 that said I would receive a call back. That was a week ago from 12/05/2024 and I have not received a single call back for more than 2 months of my account lock-out.

Now that they have my money they can care less if their product works or not. They seem to be geared at a one-and-done support based off of the marketing of their product, not the product itself. Someone will come along and over take them and will treat it like a business that will be in long term.

It should tell you which website your information was leaked, in which case you would go to that website, change your password, turn on 2-factor authentication if available, or just delete/disable the account in question after changing the password. Also be on the look out for, and be cautious of phishing emails. Aura also claims that they send requests to data brokers to get your information off the dark web, but I haven’t seen that in action so far on my end. But I’ve only had it for a few days at this point.

google figured it out, at least for Truthfinder.com. They sure keep this hidden without a lot of effort.

Omg me too, their technology is HORRIBLE. Constantly buggy and getting blocked from logging in. And good luck talking to their rude, mouthy, unknowledgeable customer service agents too. Gives advice like uninstall and reinstall the apps/extensions constantly. Will take weeks to call you back. Unusable.

Agree about Aura integrity: I kept proof of sign up, proof of their money back guarantee, canceled within their specified time period, communicated via email with Aura about that. Never got a refund. Now that the holiday crush has passed I’ll try the phone calls and then perhaps the FCC (or whoever one reports these things to), maybe Consumer Finance Protection Bureau if it will exists by the time I get around to this. Aura adds insult to injury after all this rampant data breaching. We, the public, seem to have no rudder in the storm.

thank you. i’ll try that. — in the meantime, looks like i may have to use legal means to force Aura into refund that was promised. Bad company.

Nordpass for passwords and VPN then I got two years of IDX monitoring bc my data appeared in a health breach so that covered the ID part
