About an Static Ip address

Hello there,

I’m currently looking to apply to playstation partners and from the application they request an static ip address or a vpn. I believe the vpn is by far the best option here and wanted to know if you guys know a good provider or have an experience on this field ?

Thank you everyone for passing by and leaving a comment.
Cheers !

Thank you all for fhe feedback.
I ended up for getting a vpn which was way cheaper.
I ended up for picking Surfshark for $60 usd and 2 years of subscription.

I bought a business internet line for specifically this purpose :expressionless_face:

I would get a cheap VPS with static IP address and set up wireguard on it. This would allow you to use the VPN for other stuff as well, because address space of major VPN providers is usually blocked (hard captchas or just total block) for anything you might want to use it for.

It really depends on how much effort you want to spend on setting it up vs how much money you have available.

can I know why they require a static ip address?

They do this for security (which admittedly is a little outdated but that’s their choice). You can either:

  • use an ISP that provides a static IP
  • use a VPN.

A lot of VPN providers will charge extra for the static IP functionality so budget for that. I use NordVPN as they support OpenVPN, which I use with some of my hardware, and I add on their Dedicated IP option.

I’m not sure of the exact cost, but I would think getting a static IP from a cloud service like Azure/AWS would be cheaper than getting one from your ISP. Not sure if anyone has tried and has a real world price quote…

I guess a lot would depend on what / how much traffic you’re expected to service.

Pritunl for your server and client. Then you rent a VPS (OVH’s cheapest $5/month option for instance, you get one unique IPv4 and one unique IPv6) and install it there. That’s probably cheapest option (NordVPN charges $70 for a dedicated IP per year on top of existing fees for instance).

Good news is that while this costs some money, it’s a useful expense at least. Since it gives you a nice little server for your extra backups needs for example.

This is exactly what I dont want. I need to get a commercial line & internet only for this. Wich is not exactly cheap where I live. Plus other requierements :-1:

THIS

I’ve used both https://www.ovhcloud.com/ and https://buyvm.net/ for a similar reason. If done right you can even host your own game servers on your home network with out exposing your home network to the internet. I connect to a wireguard server on my vps and can use it like a “normal” consumer vpn but with a static ip.

But I mostly forward ports over the wireguard interface to a local machine that is connected via wg. Creating a scuffed reverse proxy that I think works but I haven’t really tried to test its security.

Regardless vps are dirt cheap and are worth playing with. they can solve your problem and more

They filter access to documentation by IP

Probably because they need to filter the traffic once a customer is connected to their servers.

It’s common for game companies to restrict access to external resources to static IPs as a safety measure. As part of my job I get remote access to pre-release game builds and/or devices owned by game developer companies and it’s common for them to ask us for a static IP address.

Yeah my ISP is kinda not offering that (which sucks)
So I start looking for other options which as well are not cheap.
So I think my best choice is the vpn, will check for nord vpn and other providers before making a final desiccion.

Thank you tho for mentioning NordVPN, I think I have seen their ads around (everywhere) but at the moment I did not remember them.

When the amounts are this low, I would go for whatever fits your needs best. It’s a few dollars p. Month difference. Pick whatever you feel more comfortable working with.

you can’t even access their documentation from another location?

I get that
But documentation??

Makes me really scared if someday somehow I’ll get there

IP address is not the same thing as location. They are different things.

Access is filtered by IP. If you go to the café and use the WiFi, you’ll be using the café IP address and that won’t work.

I get that But documentation??

Documentation shows all the possible API access. It’s a treasure trove for hackers as it would make them much easier to break into the system and then install illegal copies of games.

AFAIK, console makers are selling the devices at very thin margins, sometimes at a loss, and then make it up by selling software. If the software was as easy to pirate as it is on PC, they would be losing significant chunk of the revenue, possibly even losing the whole “consoles are much cheaper than PC” argument if they needed to raise the hardware price.

A VPN that gives you a dedicated IP is all you need though, it’s really no extra bother. I have to use one when I want to connect to work servers and I’m travelling, it’s super convenient
